An irrigation water pump is a machine used to transfer water from an irrigation canal or stream to a field. Irrigation water pumps work by transferring water from an irrigation canal or stream through a series of pipes and discharge valves into the field.

Reciprocating pumps use pistons to move the water back and forth between the two reservoirs. Centrifugal pumps use rotating blades to create a whirling motion that transfers water. They are less common than rotary or reciprocating pumps, but they are more efficient because they transfer more water per minute.
